Catchment creatures

A number of creatures live across our catchments and in our waterways and dams. On this page you can meet them, learn a little more about their story and download a picture you can print and colour.
Craig the Cockatoo

Craig the Cockatoo

Hi there! My name is Craig and I am an endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo. I am the guardian of the catchment, spending my days supervising all of the comings and goings. I like to perch in a she-oak tree and inform my mates of what’s happening with a loud, raucous sqwark.

Gus the Gudgeon

Gus the Gudgeon

G’day – I’m Gus and I’m in charge of the Wivenhoe waterways. I love conservation and can’t wait to teach you more about the need for clean and green catchments. I love clean water as dirty water threatens my mates and my survival. I get very angry when I see pollution happening in the dam!

Gilbert the Frog

Gilbert the Frog

My name’s Gilbert and I am the life blood of the environment. I like to stay wet and hang out in the rainforest with all of my friends. I know the importance of ‘Water for Life’ and the importance of a clean, green catchment. Sick Gilbert = Sick Environment!

Gary the GoannaGary the Goanna

I’m Gary and I am a ground-dweller living throughout the catchment. I spend my day scavenging for leftover food that humans leave behind, and love to eat the eggs of other animals! I am sneaky and sly and watch what all the other creatures get up to. I also love climbing trees and will often camouflage myself against a Tall Spotted Gum.

Erica the Eel

Erica the Eel

Hello, I am Erica the Eel and I love to slip and slide around the bottom of the dam. I have lots of other eel friends in the dam – and sometimes when it hasn’t rained too much you can see us swimming in the shallows. My favourite thing to do is eat the small creatures living in the mud at the base of the dam.

hugo the turtle

Hugo the Turtle

G’day mate – I’m Hugo and I am the defender and protector of our healthy waterways. My favourite way to pass the time is to inform others about the importance of our waterways. When I am not passing on the ‘Water for Life’ message, I can be found lazing around my nice, clean pond dreaming about the healthy waterways that make their way out to my mates living in Moreton Bay. I just love talking about the quality of water in our dams and waterways!

Barry the Bass

Barry the Bass

I’m Barry and I am a lazy fellow. I am an introduced species, and I prefer to chase a fisherman’s hook than find my own food. I prefer to live in healthy, clean water and given the chance, my bass buddies and I can grow quite large and fat!

Peta the Perch

Peta the Perch

I am Peta and I am super sporty. My family and I were introduced to the dam as a recreational fish, and we are a much sought after prize by many fisherman. I like to dart and weave and dodge through the dam.

Trina the Tortoise

Trina the Tortoise

Hello. My name is Trina and I love to laze in ponds and puddles near the spillways and walls of our dams. I am a strong swimmer with a long, elegant neck and I spend my spare time doing synchronised swimming and soaking up the warm sun.
